Interview with Larry
and Jonne
Lapua 07.08.2009
B: Hei! How are you? J: Fine.
L: How are you?
B: Tired…
J: Ok…you came all
the way from Tampere?
B: Yes.
J: How long it took?
B: Around two
hours…it is not that far.
J: Ok.
B: So let’s start… Is
there a special reason why you cut your hair that short?
It’s a stupid
question but some fans wanted to know.
J: (laughing) They
were in a bad condition, and I felt so… it’s not about…you know…
B: Just a mood
J: Yes just a mood.
B: How was your trip
to LA?
J: It was nice. Next
time we gonna be there with the whole band.
B: Ok, so you fixed
the date for recording now?
J: Yeah. I think it
is gonna be nice and interesting something new for us.
The whole thing,
people, the place, and everyone around the band…
B: Do you think you
have some time to explore LA?
J: Yeah we will
spend there many weeks…
L: We was just
talking about renting a car, some American…
J: Yeah without
roof.
L: (laughing)
J: American Dream.
(laughing)
B: Yeah!
J: It’s nice…
L: Driving…at the
hills…you know…straight down…
J: I feel a bit
shamed cause I don’t have a driving licence.
But he has one and
Antti and Jay have one…so…
B: Have you ever
tried to get one?
J: No…no
B: I heard it should
be difficult.
J: Actually one
friend of mine, he offered to give me some lessons,
So it will be more
easier to me.
B: That’s good.
J: But now I am
writing…we are working with the songs…
B: Do you have a
working title for the album?
J: Ähhh …
L: Yeah…(laughing)
B: But you don’t
wanna tell it?
J: No, it is secret.
B: What can the fans
expect? Will there be a main theme for the album or will it be more like a story that continues from
the start to the end?
J: (sigh) I don’t
know yet. It is difficult to say…but I think…we don’t wanna…I think there will
be some changes of course when there is a new producer and new people around,
but in the end we have released so far four albums…we have pretty strong roots
for the band…so we know what we want…what we are heading to, so it is all about
taking all good things around you…
B: But will it be
more rock or more soft songs?
J: There will be…I
think…if you like the band you won’t…ähhh be unsatisfied with the final…but I
think it is too early. All I can say about the songs…there are rock songs,
there are more melodic songs…and more everything…I mean we are better players
like we were for example a few years ago or ten years ago…I think you can hear
the skills of the band.
L: Mh…musically it is like a…I don’t know it is
kind of light Innocent in a way…
J: Yeah!
L: The songs just
came to us and we…we…
J: We didn’t have to
force ourselves…
L: Yeah…
B: So you worked on
the songs together?
J: Yeah this
time…and even more we did work the whole preproduction…or how you call it…you
know…we did it with Larry and Snack…
L: Yeah we started
from the empty table…basically
J: Yeah…that was how
it came…and I don’t know it is just we are in a position that, I think it is
time to turn the page and we gonna hat ourselves to the studios…than we gonna
be wiser about what it’s gonna be like… it is like talking about your baby…
B: Yeah.
L: (Laughing)
J: That is still in
your…testical…
L: (Laughing)
J: You know what I
mean? You are still in the middle of the progress…
B: You never know
what is gonna be at the end…
J: Yeah…yeah…you are
about to start something but…
B: But I hope you
won’t have this pain…(laughing)
L: (laughing)
J: Now we already
know…who is gonna be there on the other side…we know the producer…we know
mixer…we know everything…that’s why it took so long…our first main idea was
that we gonna be already spend the summer time in the studio so there was a bit
little delay with everything…it’s a bigger label…things happens more fast like
they used about… but now we have the whole plan for the upcoming album.
It’s gonna be out in
spring 2010!
B: That is a little
bit longer than the fans thought it would be…
J: Yeah I mean not
spring…maybe…
B: A little bit
earlier?
J: Yeah…
L: Maybe March or
something…
B: What about a
tour?
J: I don’t know…when
we gonna start it…first plan was like we gonna be in Japan in October, this was supposed
to be the first shows with the new album…but now we are late so…
B: Maybe some gigs
in Finland
in the end of the year?
J: I promised that
was the first scenario…you know…we will see…but…of course we gonna make…I think
the whole success of the album and everything will show how wide we are able to
tour as a band…let’s see… hopefully as many as possible will find our band…
B: Ok…a lot of fans
were afraid that you will go to America
now and that you stay there and that you never will come back to Germany…like
Ville Valo did…
J: Yeah I know…I
think it’s a …we wanna…it doesn’t matter…we just wanted to try something new…we
got this opportunity to make it over there and you know…let’s see of course
this album will be out in America as well…
B: But this is good…
J: Yeah it’s good
but…I think…they shouldn’t be worried about…anything.
B: No…
J: You know…we gonna
be around always… I mean as long as we are able to make music as a band…
B: I was surprised
because we had this small talk with one of the guys from Loaded (the new band
of bassist Duff from Guns N’ Roses) in Cologne after a gig…and he told us that
HIM isn’t that well know in America only in some parts…I thought they would be
more successful over there…
J: They got gold
with Dark light…but I don’t know about the latest one… it was more like
progressive…
L: Yeah Doom Metal…
I don’t even know
are they big or not…
B: Not really…
J: I mean in the
states if you are really big you are selling like millions and millions…and
they sold like…
I don’t know but
gold limit is 500.000… I mean they are the biggest from Finland…of
course…
B: Yes for sure…but
you gonna beat it know!
L: Of course!
(laughing)
J: That’s the main
target…(laughing)
L: We gonna beat the
Rolling Stones…
J: It is not about
how… who is gonna sell…I think… hopefully we will b around for a long time.
B: Yes… How many
weeks did you have planned for the recording?
J: We have some kind
of limit for it…but I don’t know yet… I think it will take longer…
L: It is always
changing…you can’t really say how long it takes…with the vocals or guitars…it
could be one day or three days…
B: Yes and it
deoends on the mood of the band…
J: Hm…yeah and how
fast Jay is gonna be with the drums…you know…if he likes to stay in LA he is
gonna do only one song per week or per month…don’t know yet…at least one month
we gonna be there…
B: Ok, that s maybe
enough time…you never know…
J: No you never
know…I think it will take a bit longer in the end…
L: Yeah
J: Like I always
said…I promised something like you know…it’s gonna be out a new single…and bla
bla bla it is always getting further…
B: Yes I know…and
sometimes it takes much more time than you think because you have to record a
song again and again…
J: Mh…hopefully we
are able to stay around as long as…( a very long break) we are alive…with the
band…because it’s like…you know when there’s gonna be some…when we gonna start
family…some day…I am talking about in ten years…in twenty years…in few…you
never know…
B: Yeah…and it is
hard to have a family with this job…
J: Yeah…yeah it is.
But we don’t have that responsibility yet. Thank God…we are able to put all and
give all our energies…
B: But it depends, I
know lots of musicians who have children and they are touring with their
families…like Angelo Kelly…he has three small children and he was touring
around 150 gigs last year…or Marie from Roxette…she has children too…so it is
possible to have both…
J: Yeah it is
possible of course…
L: Yeah it’s about
the quality of the time not how much…
J: Mh yeah…but I
meant it like I feel like I don’t wanna stop now… we don’t wanna stop…
B: But you can take
your children with you on tour…
J: We can’t stop now
as a band…you know…about working…and with working…and with touring and…I think
it is more now like we gonna push it even a little bit harder than ever before.
L: Yeah…
J: And I think the
future feels…I have this vibes and it is gonna be really interesting…
B: But let’s come
back to the tour…do you thing you going to tour Europe
again?
L: Of course…
B: Are there
countries where you wanted to go where you haven’t been yet?
J: Yes…lots of
B: Ok…which one?
J: How many
countries are there in the world…one festival in the moon…
L: UK would be
interesting…
J: Yeah UK…
B: Yeah…London…you haven’t been to London at your last Tour!
So many fans asked
if you go there next time…
L: Yeah…London would be great…
B: And is there a
possibility that Flinch is going on tour with you in Germany?
J: I haven’t heard
anything…
B: Ok because some
fans liked it very much when you had this gig in Berlin…so
they asked if it would be possible to take Flinch as support for Germany.
J: I don’t even know
are we gonna make a headline tour in spring…let’s see I think there are lots of
possibilities…everything is open still… the whole case…we wanna keep it open…
L: We are
concentrating on the songs right now…
J: Yeah… but it’s
like I would love to…I mean we would love to make a bigger tour…we had some
discussions about that with the band…that we want to make a bigger
tour…probably we gonna be support act…we just need to find the right band…but
like Larry said…now we are concentrating on the songs…
L: Tour would be
great if it would be…
J: Bigger places…
L: You know…the
limit is like…to tour the whole world… that would be…like a dream
B: Yes sure…
J: Mh…but we don’t
know how we gonna start in Europe with the next album … I think…there is a
possibility that we gonna make a headline tour with some kind of band first and
than something else…but there is also as well this second option that we gonna
make it upside down…you know… and we do something special and than…
B: Just wait and
see…
J: Yeah…let’s see
what its gonna be…
B: You never know
what tomorrow brings…
J: Yeah…Thank God…I
don’t know if I am gonna die or anything is gonna happen...
B: So…did you hear
about the death of Michael Jackson?
J: Mh…yeah…
B: What did you
think when you heard it?
J: I was really sad…
L: Me too…
J: Actually I shed a
tear…
L: Me too…
B: It was so
unbelievable because it happened so unexpected and…
J: Yeah…
B: I think this
world has lost one of its best musicians…
J: Definitely I
agree…
L: I have always
been a big fan of Michael Jackson. I remember when I was a little boy we had
this neighbour he was always showing Michael Jackson videos to us when we were
kids. It was so wonderful…great music.
J: And we were just
listening Michael while we were driving here…
B: Really?
J+L: Yeah!
B: What Song?
L: We had the
Dangerous album…
J: Yeah…
B: Is there a song
that you like most from this album?
L: Mhhhh…Who is
it…is good…Ahh Give in to me…
J: There are a lot
of great songs…but my favourite one is definitely Billie Jean…and Earth Song…
B: That is one of my
favourites too…maybe you should cover it…
J: Actually we had this idea…two years ago…
L: Yeah…for the
earth song…
J: Yeah during
Anorectic…or Sweet and deceitful… during the second album probably.
L: Now it would be
too obvious…
J: (laughing) Yeah…
L: To make it.
J: Yeah…everybody is
doing that…
L: Yeah!
J: But I…mhhh why
shouldn’t…cause you know I think it is great when people are making honour to
Michael. He was in a way misunderstood…
B: He really had a
hard life.
L: Mhhh…
J: He had a very
hard…probably childhood.
B: Yes…never had the
chance to be in private.
J: (visibly touched)
I give all my sympathy for his soul.
L: Me too!
B: Ok…back to the
interview…does Antti has a new Tattoo? I saw this Uniklubi Cover and there he
has something on the side that I have never seen before.
J: I don’t even know
because he has so many of them…I think it was some part on the tour I didn’t
even know…about his tattoos and how many…
L: (laughing) Yes…me
neither…
B: (laughing)
J: Just when he took
a shower or he is putting is shirt off…
B: So you are more
wondering if there is no new tattoo.
L: Yeah…(laughing)
J: He is like a
walking piece of art.
B: But you like art?
J: Yeah I love
art…but I don’t even know… I can’t follow him…he is so fast with it…
B: So maybe it would
be nice to have someone in the band who could do tattoos…
L: It would be also
very dangerous because you now drinking some booze…and than making the
tattoo…painting…
J: (laughing)
Yeah…like on…Jackass…Tv Studio
L: Yeah…there was
this…
J: Yes Tattoo
man…they were like driving…they were in a car while it was moving and…(Makes a
sound like a tattoo machine) (laughing)
L: Yeah doing a
Smiley Face.
J: Yeah…
L: Horrible…
B: So here is the
last question…If you have to choose one of your own songs for your wedding or
funeral…which one would you choose? And why?
L: What wedding or
funeral?
B: Yes! From you own
songs!
J: From Negative.
I’m still thinking about…actually if the arrangement change…you know of some
song…it would be…”About my sorrow”. That would be beautiful. I think it is too
cheesy…I can’t take it…even though I love cheese…
L: I would choose
for the funeral…”One last shot” (everyone laughing)
J: And for funeral I
would take “Show must go on”
B: But it is not
your own song! ;)
J: No it is not…
B: Unfortunately!
J: But it is a song
I would love to be played…
B: We should take
some photos for the interview.
L: Yeah…let’s take
some pictures there…in front of these arts!
(we stood up to take
some pictures meanwhile Jonne was still sinning about a Negative song he would
like to be played at his funeral)
J: Something…hey…for
the funeral…something from the next album!
B: Ok…so you have to
answer this question again in the next interview…
J: Or “Gravitiy of
Love” something like that. I don’t wanna think about that…
B: Me neither! I
want to enjoy every day and hold on to the good things in my life without
thinking about that it could be over soon!
I wanna thank Larry
and Jonne for taking the time for this interview and hope that they
will have a great time in LA! Looking forward to see you soon! |
